●  The Tehri Dam is a multi-purpose rock and earth-fill embankment dam on the Bhagirathi River near Tehri in Uttarakhand,a joint venture by the government of India and the government of Uttar Pradesh which is the primary dam of the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Ltd.

●  Tehri Dam withholds a reservoir for irrigation, municipal water supply and the generation of 1,000 MW of hydroelectricity.

●  It has been the object of protests by environmental organizations and local people of the region.

●  It lies in the Central Himalayan Seismic Gap, a major geologic fault zone. This region was the site of a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in October 1991, with an epicenter 53 km from the dam. Dam proponents claim that the complex is designed to withstand an earthquake of 8.4 magnitude, but some seismologists say that earthquakes with a magnitude of 8.5 or more could occur in this region.

•   The Alaknanda is a Himalayan river in the state of Uttarakhand and one of the two headstreams of the Ganges, In hydrology, the Alaknanda is considered the source stream of the Ganges on account of its greater length and discharge.

•   The Bhāgīrathī is a turbulent Himalayan river in the state of Uttarakhand, and one of the two headstreams of the Ganges, the Bhagirathi is considered the source stream of the Ganges.

•   The Mandakini River is a tributary of the Alaknanda River in the state of Uttarakhand.

•   The river runs for approximately 81 kilometres (50 mi) between the Rudraprayag and Sonprayag areas and emerges from the Chorabari Glacier.

•   The river merges with river Songanga at Sonprayag and flows past the Hindu temple Madhyamaheshwar at Ukhimath.

•   At the end of its course it drains into the Alaknanda.

•   The Phata Byung Hydroelectric Project is a run-off river project located on the cascade of the Mandakini River.

•   Singoli Bhatwari is a 99MW hydro power project.

•   The Dhauliganga is a turbulent Himalayan river which rises in the border regions of India and China and flows south into the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.

•   It joins the Alaknanda, the major source stream of the Ganges River.

•   Dhauliganga Power Station (4x70 MW) is a run of the river scheme with small pondage to harness the hydro power potential of Dhauliganga river.

•   Two hydropower projects located in close proximity at Rishiganga (13.2 MW), and Tapoban (520 MW).
