Shompen tribe

These are indigenous to the interior of Great Nicobar Island.

They have been designated as Scheduled Tribe.

They practice a hunter-gatherer subsistence economy.

Shompens were largely protected from the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that devastated the coastal regions inhabited by Nicobarese and the Indian population.
