Mughal Paintings

Miniature paintings were already evolving in various regions since 10^th century and continued during Sultanate period but the new form of art called the Mughal paintings began from the period of Humayun.

When Humayun, the second Mughal emperor, returned from his exile, he brought along with him two eminent Persian artists – Mir Sayyid Ali and Abd al-Samad.

Based on Humayun’s instructions, these Persian artists created many famous paintings, including the ‘Khamsa of Nizami.’

These paintings deviated from the traditional style of Persian art and hence a new style of art form called ‘Mughal Painting’ was born.

Mughal paintings were further developed by subsequent Mughal emperors.

Features:

Mughal painting remained confined to the Mughal court and did not reach the people.

The Mughal rulers brought Persian painters with them, at the same time they patronized Indian painters and the collaboration between these two schools of painters resulted in the synthesis.

Apart from Persian books of fables, themes from Mahabharata were also selected.

The Mughal pictures were small in size, and hence are known as ‘miniature paintings’.

Jahangir had a great fascination for nature and included the display of birds, animals and flowers.

Scenes of battles were also depicted.

जब हुमायूँ, दूसरे मुगल सम्राट, अपने निर्वासन से लौटे, तो वे अपने साथ दो प्रमुख फारसी कलाकार – मीर सैयद अली और अब्द अल-समद को लाए।

हुमायूँ के निर्देशों के आधार पर, इन फारसी कलाकारों ने कई प्रसिद्ध चित्र बनाए, जिनमें ‘ख़म्सा ऑफ निज़ामी (Khamsa of Nizami)’ शामिल है।

इन चित्रों ने पारंपरिक फारसी कला की शैली से भिन्नता दिखाई और इस प्रकार एक नई शैली की कला का रूप जिसे ‘मुगल चित्रकला (Mughal Painting)’ कहा जाता है, उत्पन्न हुआ।
