Madan Mohan Malaviya (1861 — 1946)

He was an Indian scholar, educational reformer and politician who is notable for his role in the Indian independence movement.

He was addressed as Pandit, a title of respect, and also as Mahamana (Great Soul), which was given to him by Gandhiji.

Malaviya aimed to promote modern education among Indians and co-founded the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) at Varanasi in 1916.

He was president of the Indian National Congress four times and the founder of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha.

Malaviya was one of the founders of The Bharat Scouts and Guides.

He founded a highly influential English newspaper called ‘The Leader’ in 1909 which was published from Allahabad.

He was a member of the Imperial Legislative Council from 1912 until 1919, when it was converted to the Central Legislative Assembly, he remained a member of it until 1926.

He was also the Chairman of Hindustan Times from 1924 to 1946.

In protest against the Communal Award to provide separate electorates for minorities, Malaviya left the Congress and started the Congress Nationalist Party.

The slogan ‘Satyameva Jayate’ (Truth alone triumphs, taken from Mundakopanishad) was suggested by him as the national slogan while presiding over the Indian National Congress session of 1918 at Delhi.

Malaviya was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna.

Sarojini Naidu (1879 – 1949))

She was an Indian political activist, feminist and poet.

She was also a proponent of civil rights, women's emancipation, and anti-imperialistic ideas.

She was an important person in India's struggle for independence from colonial rule.

She was also the first Indian woman (Overall second, only after Annie Besant) to be president of the Indian National Congress in1925 and first women to be appointed as governor of an Indian state in 1947 (United Provinces).

Her poem, ‘In the Bazaars of Hyderabad’ remains one of her most popular which was published in 1912.

She helped established the Women's Indian Association in 1917.

In 1927, Naidu was a founding member of the All India Women's Conference.

She was also an excellent writer; her major works include:

o The Golden Threshold

o The Song of the Palanquin Bearers

o The Sceptred Flute: Songs of India

o The Feather of the Dawn

o The Broken Wing
