‘Ratnakara’ denoted ‘Arabian Sea’.

‘Bay of Bengal’ was ‘Mahodadhi’ or ‘Poorvapayodhi’ or ‘Ksheerodam’ (in Kishkinda kanda of Ramayana, which is described from Indian east coast, through Indonesia etc till Australia).

‘Pacific Ocean’ was ‘Jaloda Sagaram’ (in same chapter), which actually means ‘soft/peaceful waters’. It was later called ‘Prasanta Sagara’.

The confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati at Prayaga was called ‘Triveni Sangam’.

‘रत्नाकर’ का अर्थ ‘अरब सागर’ था।

‘बंगाल की खाड़ी’ को ‘महोदधि’ या ‘पूर्वपयोधि’ या ‘क्षीरोडम’ कहा जाता था (जो रामायण के किष्किंधा कांड में वर्णित है, जो भारतीय पूर्वी तट से इंडोनेशिया आदि के माध्यम से ऑस्ट्रेलिया तक है)।

‘प्रशांत महासागर’ को ‘जलोद सागरम’ (उसी अध्याय में) कहा जाता था, जिसका वास्तव में अर्थ है ‘मृदु/शांत जल’। इसे बाद में ‘प्रशांत सागर’ कहा गया।

गंगा, यमुना और काल्पनिक सरस्वती का संगम प्रयाग में ‘त्रिवेणी संगम’ कहा जाता था।
