Passage- 3

Elephants are landscape architects, creating clearings in the forest, preventing overgrowth of certain plant species and allowing space for the regeneration of others, which in turn provide sustenance to others herbivorous animals. Elephants eat plants, fruits and seeds, propagating the seeds when they defecate in other places as they travel. Elephant dung provides nourishment to plants and animals and acts as a breeding ground for insects. In times of drought, they access water by digging holes which benefits other wildlife.

हाथी दृश्यभूमि के वास्तुकार हैं, ये वन में वृक्ष-विहीन स्थल निर्मित करते हैं, कतिपय पादप प्रजातियों के अतिवर्धन की रोकथाम करते हैं और अन्य पादपों के पुनर्जनन के लिए स्थान प्रदान करते हैं, जिससे कि आगे अन्य शाकाहारी पशुओं को निर्वाह उपलब्ध होता है। हाथी पादप, फल और बीज खाते हैं, और अपने आने-जाने के दौरान चलते हुए मलत्याग के साथ इन बीजों का प्रसार करते जाते हैं। हाथी का गोबर पादपों और पशुओं के लिए पोषण प्रदान करता है और कीटों के लिए प्रजनन-स्थल की तरह काम करता है। सूखा पड़ने के समय ये धरती में गड्ढे खोद कर जल तक पहुँच बनाते हैं, जो दूसरे वन्यजीवों को लाभ पहुँचाता है।
