Passage- 2

More than half of Indian women and almost a quarter of Indian men of working age suffer from anaemia. According to studies, they are anywhere from 5 - 15% less productive than they could be, as a result thereof. India also has the largest tuberculosis burden in the world, costing 170 million workdays to the country annually. But what is just as important as lost productivity now is lost potential in the future. It is becoming increasingly clear that on many measures of cognitive ability, malnourished Indian children perform two or three times worse than their adequately nourished peers. For an economy that will be more dependent on highly skilled workers, this poses a significant challenge. And it is one that really should be addressed given India's demographic outlook.

श्रमयोग्य आयु की लगभग आधी से अधिक भारतीय महिलाएँ और लगभग एक-चौथाई भारतीय पुरुष अनीमिया से ग्रस्त हैं । अध्ययनों के अनुसार, इसके परिणामस्वरूप वे जितना उत्पादनशील हो सकते थे, उससे कहीं 5% से 15% तक कम उत्पादनशील हैं । भारत में दुनिया के सबसे अधिक यक्ष्मा (ट्यूबरकुलोसिस) से ग्रस्त लोगों का बोझ भी है, जिससे देश में वार्षिक रूप से 17 करोड़ श्रम-दिवसों की हानि होती है । किन्तु, आज जितनी महत्त्वपूर्ण उत्पादकता की हानि है, भविष्य में होने वाली क्षमता की हानि उतनी ही महत्त्वपूर्ण है । यह दिनोंदिन अधिक स्पष्ट होता जा रहा है कि कुपोषित भारतीय बच्चे संज्ञानात्मक योग्यता के अनेक मापनों पर, अपने साथ के भली-भाँति सुपोषित बच्चों की तुलना में, दो या तीन गुना कम निष्पादन करते हैं । एक ऐसी अर्थव्यवस्था के लिए, जो अत्यधिक कुशल कामगारों पर अपेक्षाकृत अधिक निर्भर होगी, इससे एक महत्त्वपूर्ण चुनौती सामने आती है । और भारत के जनांकिकीय दृष्टिकोण से, यह एक ऐसी चुनौती है जिससे वास्तव में निपटना चाहिए ।
