Successful cultivation of cotton requires a long frost-free period, plenty of sunshine, and a moderate rainfall, usually from 60 to 120 cm.

Soils usually need to be fairly heavy, although the level of nutrients does not need to be exceptional.

Gram

Gram commonly known as chickpea or Bengal gram is the most important pulse crop of India.

It is used for human consumption as well as for feeding animals. Fresh green leaves are used as vegetables while straw of chickpea is an excellent fodder for cattle.

The grains are also used as vegetables. India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Burma, and Turkey are main gram growing countries.

India ranks first in the world in respect of production and sown area, followed by Pakistan.

Black pepper

Black pepper is native to present-day South India and is extensively cultivated there and elsewhere in tropical regions.

Vietnam is the largest exporter of pepper producing 24% of the world total in 2019.

Pepper requires heavy rainfall (150 - 250 cm), high humidity and warm climate.

Thrives best on virgin soils rich in humus content and the crop can be grown at elevations up to 1500 m.

The crop tolerates temperatures between 15° and 30°C.

Black pepper is cultivated to a large extent in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and to a limited extent in Maharashtra, Northeastern states and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Kerala and Karnataka account for a major portion of production of black pepper in the country.

It is a tropical plant with an edible fruit and the most economically significant plant.

Hawaii was a dominant producer of pineapples, especially for the US; however, by 2016, Costa Rica, Brazil, and the Philippines accounted for nearly one-third of the world's production of pineapples.

India produces more than 8% of total world production of pineapple.

The major pineapple producing states in India are Assam, West Bengal, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala and Bihar.
