Cattle

Cattle are commonly raised as livestock for meat (beef or veal, see beef cattle), for milk (see dairy cattle), and for hides, which are used to make leather.

Different types of cattle are common to different geographic areas.

Taurine cattle are found primarily in Europe and temperate areas of Asia, the Americas, and Australia.

Zebus (also called indicine cattle) are found primarily in India and tropical areas of Asia, America, and Australia.

Sanga cattle are found primarily in sub-Saharan Africa.

India had the largest cattle inventory in the world in 2021 followed by Brazil and China.

Buffalo

The water buffalo is a large bovid originating in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.

More than 95.8% of the world population of water buffaloes are kept in Asia, including both the river-type and the swamp-type.

The water buffalo population in India numbered over 97.9 million head in 2003, representing 56.5% of the world population.

They are primarily of the river type, with 10 well-defined breeds: the Bhadawari, Banni, Jafarabadi, Marathwadi, Mehsana, Murrah, Nagpuri, Nili-Ravi, Pandharpuri, Surti, and Toda buffaloes.

Goats

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the top producers of goat milk in 2008 were India (4 million metric tons), Bangladesh (2.16 million metric tons), and the Sudan (1.47 million metric tons).

India slaughters 41% of 124.4 million goats each year. The 0.6 million metric tonnes of goat meat make up 8% of India's annual meat production.

China, Australia, India, and Iran have the largest modern flocks, and serve both local and exportation needs for wool and mutton.

Other countries such as New Zealand have smaller flocks but retain a large international economic impact due to their export of sheep products.
